Germany's defense minister, Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg, recently resigned after admitting that he plagiarized his doctoral dissertation at the University of Bayreuth. Gregor Aisch of Vis4.net has created a visualization that illustrates the extent of Guttenberg's plagiarism as shown below. Note that the dark red lines indicate word-for-word plagiarism, while the lighter shades of red indicate other degrees of plagiarism.
I know that most universities today routinely evaluate submitted doctoral dissertations using automated plagiarism detection services such as SafeAssign. Plagiarism is more than a moral hazard, but a career risk as well...
