US Economic Prospects for 2012...
Europe will blowup once everyone realizes that the degree of "restructuring" required in Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Greece, and Spain (PIIGS) is politically infeasible. Consequentially, public spending cuts and tax increases are imminent across the PIIGS, be they instituted by public policy or national defaults. Either way, economic depression is descending upon Southern Europe.
Protestors wearing "Guy Fawkes" masks in London
The US is also facing a blowup given that banks made a "seasonal" decision to hold off on new foreclosures until after the New Year. In 2012, the US will be confronted with the largest increase in new foreclosures since 2008.
Likewise, a budget blowup in California has been on tacit hold until after the holidays. Nevertheless, California revenues are trailing budget requirments by a significant margin. Moreover, Gov Jerry Brown appears determined to conduct "business as usual" in order to amplify the California budget crisis into a voter mandate for tax increases. Whatever happens, it's bad news for California where major cuts in government employment and/or tax increases will eventually force California into economic depression on a scale not seen on the West Coast since the Great Depression.
The combination of sharp increases in mortgage foreclosures and budget remedies in California means catastrophe along the US West Coast on a scale similar to what is about to unfold along the southern flank of Europe. Deflation and depression are already evident across America in home values, real wages, and the employment to population ratio.
The economic prospects for 2012 in the US and much of Europe are grim at best. Accredited investors are certainly in a "buy" window of opportunity at this point. However, much of America is in for hard times this coming year...

The New Lords of America
The still expanding Main Street depression is creating buy opportunities all across America. My guess is that high quality rent-earning real estate and dividend-paying stocks will be snapped up quickly by those with cash, including investors from overseas. America is "on sale" and cash buyers are now eagerly sought by sellers (i.e., too many goods chasing too little cash, which is the macroeconomic formula for deflation and depression).
Those with world-class skills to sell (e.g., physicians, engineers, and entertainers) or significant rent and dividend income are the new lords of America. Everyone else (e.g., those who live on fixed incomes, government salaries and entitlements, or earn wages for other than world-class skills) are in for hard times...

The Shape of My Heart
He deals the cards as a meditation
And those he plays never suspect
He doesn't play for the money he wins
He don't play for respect
He deals the cards to find the answer
The sacred geometry of chance
The hidden law of probable outcome
The numbers lead a dance
I know that the spades are the swords of a soldier
I know that the clubs are weapons of war
I know that diamonds mean money for this art
But that's not the shape of my heart
He may play the jack of diamonds
He may lay the queen of spades
He may conceal a king in his hand
While the memory of it fades
I know that the spades are the swords of a soldier
I know that the clubs are weapons of war
I know that diamonds mean money for this art
But that's not the shape of my heart
That's not the shape, the shape of my heart
And if I told you that I loved you
You'd maybe think there's something wrong
I'm not a man of too many faces
The mask I wear is one
Those who speak know nothing
And find out to their cost
Like those who curse their luck in too many places
And those who fear are lost
I know that the spades are the swords of a soldier
I know that the clubs are weapons of war
I know that diamonds mean money for this art
But that's not the shape of my heart

US Enduring Economic Depression
According to Nobel Laureate Prof Paul Krugman (2011, December 11), "it’s time to start calling the current situation what it is: a depression." In July 2010, I reported that a Main Street depression was imploding America. Since then, the depression along Main Street has continued to expand and envelop the US national economy through today, when many in America are increasingly anxious or even afraid for the future. Evidence of economic depression in America includes the persistently low employment-to-population ratio, the devastating declines in home values, and the extended decline in real working class wages over the past decade -- this evidence is indisputable.
"Time Saving Truth from Falsehood and Envy" by François Le Moine (1688-1737)
I agree with Prof Krugman -- it's time for Americans to accept that our nation is mired in an economic depression that is deeply scarring our national political fabric -- it's the truth.

Prospects for Europe (and the US)
I just finished listening to today's press conference by European Central Bank (ECB) Pres Dr Mario Draghi. According to Pres Draghi, the ECB will not be monetizing sovereign debt in the Eurozone regardless of the consequences. Moreover, Pres Draghi made clear that channeling external funds (e.g., US Federal funds) through the International Monetary Fund (IMF) would violate the "spirit" of the EU treaty, and so the ECB would block any such efforts. Pres Draghi stated that the ECB would not stand in the way of the European Financial Stability Facility (EFSF) dispersing emergency funding, though the current capacity of the EFSF is known to be limited. Also, Pres Draghi predicted that the ECB's current contractory monetary policies will result in economic contraction in the Eurozone as a consequence.
Dr Mario Draghi (1947- )
In summary, a) the ECB will not be monetizing sovereign debt in Europe; b) the ECB will block efforts to monetize the debt by the IMF; c) the ECB will use the EFSF as its sole emergency funding facility; and d) the ECB is prepared to accept economic contraction across the Eurozone as a consequence of its efforts toward monetary contraction in the Eurozone.
My tentative conclusion is that severe austerities are coming to Europe, and especially southern Europe, regardless of whether challenged countries such as Greece, Italy, Ireland, Spain, and Portugal agree to sovereign concessions under an amended EU treaty.
My best advice for the US -- take cover...

US Employment to Population Ratio for November 2011
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the US employment to population ratio* for November 2011 stood at 58.7%, unchanged from the previous month, but up from 58.4% a year ago. The US employment to population ratio has been trending downwards since 2000.

Employment consists of all persons who, during the reference week (the calendar week including the twelfth day of the month), (a) did any work at all (at least 1 hour) as paid employees, worked in their own business or profession or on their own farm, or worked 15 hours or more as unpaid workers in an enterprise operated by a member of the family, or (b) were not working but had jobs or businesses from which they were temporarily absent because of vacation, illness, bad weather, childcare problems, maternity or paternity leave, labor-management dispute, job training, or other family or personal reasons, whether or not they were paid for the time off or were seeking other jobs.... The civilian noninstitutional population consists of persons 16 years of age and older residing in the 50 States and the District of Columbia who are not inmates of institutions (for example, penal and mental facilities and homes for the aged) and who are not on active duty in the Armed Forces.Source: Bureau of Labor Statistics

60 Minutes: Grover Norquist on Taxes
With only two days to go before the Congressional "Super Committee" officially fails America, Grover Norquist is again making headlines.
As head of Americans for Tax Reform since 1986, Grover Norquist has transformed a single issue - preventing tax hikes - into one of the key platforms of the Republican Party. As Steve Kroft reports, his biggest coup was getting more than 270 members of Congress, and nearly all of the 2012 Republican presidential primary candidates, to sign a pledge promising never to vote to raise taxes. But some opponents say the pledge may be hindering a solution to America's debt crisis. (CBS News, 2011)
Parsing Business Intelligence (BI)
Business intelligence (BI) is now a vital imperative of 21st century enterprise. Yet, a unified view about just what BI is and does for enterprise is only now emerging. Prof Ronald K Klimberg and Prof Virginia Miori (2010) address the challenge by parsing BI as follows:

Organizations, both corporate and academic, have been rushing to the table with their own BI groups and programs. Though these groups share a common title, BI, they do not share a common understanding of all that BI comprises. The establishment of their functions follows from the specific strengths and expertise within all of these organizations. This shared limitation was not based on a lack of inclusiveness, but merely a lack of cohesive vision. Further, consider that industry’s definition of business intelligence is by and large quite different from academia’s definition. More so, within industries and within academia, these definitions also vary. The definition of BI seems to depend heavily upon your particular perspective or training. What then is business intelligence...?Figure 1: Business intelligence/business analytics breakdown
Despite the appearance of BI in both academia and industry, until now the field has lacked a clear definition. Not all aspects of BI will be exploited in every situation, but it is still important to know what the future holds. Within this structure, BI was broken down into three significant areas: business information intelligence (BII), business statistical intelligence (BSI) and business modeling intelligence (BMI). Specialists exist in all of these areas, but the importance of the intersection and unions of these areas needs to be emphasized. True intelligence results from the melding of all of these technologies and tools....
Figure 1 presents a cohesive vision of business intelligence as a melding of technologies, models, techniques and practices. The three circles of the Venn diagram each represent areas of study and application that had previously been considered quite distinct: 1. information systems and technology, 2. statistics, and 3. OR/MS [Operations Research/Management Science]. It serves to encapsulate the broadening definition of BI. With this new vision, we may now characterize BI from each of three viewpoints as: business information intelligence (BII), business statistical intelligence (BSI) and business modeling intelligence (BMI). Each of the viewpoints has particular business aspects, and academically speaking, courses that are independent of the other viewpoints. Conversely, each viewpoint can work together or utilize techniques/skills from one or possibly two of the other disciplines. For example, data mining, which requires a high level of statistical knowledge as well as the availably of necessary data, may require significant IT skills and/or knowledge. Further, if data mining analysis demands a systematic process of analysis, modeling skills may be required.
Business analytics (BA), within our framework, is classified as a combination of business statistics intelligence (BSI) and business modeling intelligence (BMI): BA = BSI + BMI. BI is the union of the areas of BA, BI and business information intelligence (BII): BI = BII + BA or more specifically BII + (BSI + BMI). As evidenced in the data-mining example, black and white distinctions between disciplines can quickly become gray.
Note that modeling is a central practice in BI. Follow the link below to read the entire article.

Decision Making Processes and Routines
The following quote from Prof Daniel Kahneman's new book, Thinking, Fast and Slow, is instructive for executives:
Source: Kahneman, D (2011), Thinking, Fast and Slow, New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux.
Organizations are better than individuals when it comes to avoiding errors, because they naturally think more slowly and have the power to impose orderly procedures. Organizations can institute and enforce the application of useful checklists, as well as more elaborate exercises…At least in part by providing a distinctive vocabulary, organizations can also encourage a culture in which people watch out for one another as they approach minefields. Whatever else it produces, an organization is a factory that manufactures judgments and decisions. Every factory must have ways to ensure the quality of its products in the initial design, in fabrication, and in final inspections. The corresponding stages in the production of decisions are the framing of the problem that is to be solved, the collection of relevant information leading to a decision, and reflection and review. An organization that seeks to improve its decision product should routinely look for efficiency improvements at each of these stages. The operative concept is routine. Constant quality control is an alternative to the wholesale reviews of processes that organizations commonly undertake in the wake of disasters. There is much to be done to improve decision making. (p. 418)Let's face it, the best firms treat decision making processes and routines as core disciplines.

Symmetrical reflation is the best option for restoring growth and competitiveness on the eurozone’s periphery while undertaking necessary austerity measures and structural reforms. This implies significant easing of monetary policy by the European Central Bank; provision of unlimited lender-of-last-resort support to illiquid but potentially solvent economies; a sharp depreciation of the euro, which would turn current-account deficits into surpluses; and fiscal stimulus in the core if the periphery is forced into austerity. The monetary and fiscal challenges in Europe and the US can only be resolved through one or more of the following multiple avoidance options: (a) default; (b) austerity (e.g., spending cuts and/or tax increases); and (c) monetary expansion (i.e., "printing" money leading to inflation). Prof Roubini is for monetary expansion, which is likely to be the only remaining option once the people make clear that austerity is unacceptable, and governments make clear that defaults are out of the question.

Why Italy Matters More Than Greece
The economic disaster in Greece has reached a crescendo in recent weeks, and the Greek tragedy is indeed worrisome. However, the real problem that Europe must confront is not Greece, but Italy, which represents 16.9% of Europe's total GDP. As the chart below makes clear, the GDP's of Greece, Spain, and Portugal are essentially sideshows to that of Italy and the Eurozone as a whole.
Europe simply does not have the resources to act as lender of last resort to Italy. Certainly, Greece is a major issue for Europe, but if Italy defaults, then the Eurozone will disintegrate.

Nevada Makes Foreclosure Fraud A Felony
According Nick Timiraos of the Wall Street Journal (2011, Nov 7):

Foreclosure filings in Nevada plunged in October during the first month of a new state law stiffening foreclosure-processing requirements.... Nevada’s state Assembly passed a measure that took effect on Oct 1 designed to crack down on “robo-signing,” where bank employees signed off on huge numbers of legal filings while falsely claiming to have personally reviewed each case.... Among other steps, the Nevada law makes it a felony — and threatens to hold individuals criminally liable — for making false representations concerning real estate title. Individuals are also subject to civil penalties of $5,000 for each violation.Other states should follow Nevada's lead by passing and enforcing laws designed to discourage incidents of title fraud by banks and others in the courts. Foreclosure rates in Nevada have lead the nation since the financial crisis began in 2008.

US Employment to Population Ratio Improves
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the US employment to population ratio* for October 2011 improved to 58.7%, up from 58.5% the previous month, and up from 58.6% a year ago. The US employment to population ratio has been trending downwards since 2000.

Many economists believe that reporting the number employed as a percentage of the civilian population provides a more accurate description of the current state of employment than conjecturing the number of "unemployed" in a population. The US employment to population ratio reached an historical peak of 64.4% on an annual basis in 2000.

Why High Heels?
A number of years back, I read the following excerpt written by Sandra Bernhard and Annie Leibovitz in The New Yorker, and understood, once and for all, what feminism was all about.
Source: Bernhard S & Leibovitz, A (1996, February 26), Why High Heals? The New Yorker.
"Why do you insist on wearing those outrageous high heels?" the woman asks. I cross my legs and admire the bulge of my calf exaggerated by the arch of my shoe, and stare down at her conservative little boat-shaped slip-on that gives her foot the illusion of floating away down a shallow creek like a withered fall leaf. I sip on a sweaty Scotch and reply warmly, "When I walk out the door in a good pair of heels, and I'm not referring to some kitschy crap that you can buy on a trip to Frederick's of Hollywood but a really solid set of heels from Manolo or Prada Chanel Clergerie, I never feel vulnerable, there's no time for any weakness, I feel focused strong secure, my stride is potent and no one hassles me when I'm standing on the corner hailing a cab, you'd better believe I'm the first fare he'll throw on his brakes for, you put the two of us just a few yards away, he'll pass you right by. Why? Because I demand respect and my heels back me up -- so don't go worrying about me, I've never been better, care for a cigar?"Afterwards, I ripped the page out of the magazine and kept it for posterity's sake. Ladies, I get it...
