Brig Gen Stewart enlisted in the US Army as a private in 1941 and rose to the rank of Colonel in the US Army Air Corps during World War II with credit for flying 20 combat missions over Europe. Following the war, Brig Gen Stewart served in the US Air Force Reserve achieving flag officer rank before his retirement in 1968.

A little known fact about Jimmy Stewart was that he served in the military during World War II, rising from Private to Colonel between 1941 and 1945, and completing 20 combat missions over Europe. Col Stewart continued to serve in the US Air Force Reserve following the war and later rose to the rank of Brigadier General in 1959 before retiring in 1968. Jimmy Stewart was a quintessential American hero of his time -- the real thing.
