Professor Richard Stites passed away on Sunday, March 7, 2010, in Helsinki, Finland. He will be buried at Uspenskii Sobor in Helsinki, in view of one of his favorite places, the Slavonic Library. Professor Stites taught Russian and Soviet history at Georgetown University for over 30 years, and will be greatly missed. Professor Stites was my favorite professor during my studies at Georgetown. He once observed during a lecture that "you can't read peoples' minds, but you can read their hearts..."
